Raid on Littlehampton Post Office

ABOUT £3,000 was stolen during a raid on Littlehampton's main Post Office.

Burglars smashed their way in through the back of the premises, in The Arcade, on Sunday (January 24) night, after cutting electricty lines.

Between 1,800 and 2,500 worth of coins were taken from a secure cabinet, along with a further 500 from cash drawers, though attempts to break into the main safe were not successful.

The office was closed all day Monday and until lunchtime on Tuesday, while damage to doors and equipment was repaired, and neighbouring businesses were also forced to remain closed on Monday, while electricity supplies were re-connected.

Louise O'Neill, who runs The Arcade Toy Box, which is two doors down from the Post Office, said: "I arrived to work on Monday to find that we had no power. It was not reconnected until about 8.30pm, so we lost a whole day's trade."

A Post Office Ltd spokesman confirmed that there had been a burglary.

"The police are investigating the incident and anyone with information should contact them," he added.

Sgt Peter Allan, of Littlehampton police, said that the Post Office had been closed as usual at 12.30pm on Saturday, and that an alarm had been activated at 11.23pm on Sunday, though checks by a security company found there to be a fault with the system.

The Post Office manager discovered the burglary when he arrived at work at 8am on Monday, and called police.

Anyone with information should call Littlehampton CID on 0845 60 70 999, quoting serial 209 of January 25.
