Organiser Roger Crouch has issued a rallying cry to the town to help him take back the record, which was snatched from Bexhill’s grasp after just three months.

Roger told the Observer: “Bexhill Roaring 20s was a great success last year, blessed with lovely weather thousands of people came from all generations to enjoy an action packed day.

“I have been informed that for the world record attempt the youngest person taking part was four years old and a lady of 92 danced in the headband her mother had worn in the 1920s - how wonderful is that?

“In October last year London went for the record which has only been verified by Guinness fairly recently with 975 dancers.

“Two weekends ago The Blue Mountains and Lithgow in Australia attempted to regain the record and although failed with 466, did the attempt in great style, fedoras and headbands off to them.

“In the ABC news report in Australia, Bexhill was mentioned and in the former London success covered nationally and abroad Bexhill was also mentioned in all reports.

“I personally think it is fabulous as our marketing work is being done for us and I am having numerous enquiries from all over about our event.

“As such a Charleston dance troupe from New York wish to travel to the UK to be part of our event.

“I know of only one thing better than gaining a world record which is taking it back.

“As such on Saturday July 23 at the Bexhill Roaring 20s we attempt the Charleston challenge of bringing the world record for the Largest Charleston Dance back to Bexhill and Sussex. Let’s do this!”

The event will again be sponsored by Alastair Hazell.
