Rare work showsour fishermen

THE working life of Hastings fishermen is depicted in rarely seen drawings and paintings by Laetitia Yhap.

The exhibition - Fishermen of Hastings Stade - is running at the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester until April 7.

Laetitia Yhap moved to Hastings in 1967. By then she had already had 3 exhibitions in London of large scale watercolour paintings but gradually experienced the need to reintroduce the human element into her work and decided to make the fishing community a focus in her work.

These drawings lay forgotten in a box in her room for nearly 40 years and were rediscovered by Laetitia when reorganising her studio. They formed the basis for the paintings she made of the daily life of the fishermen of Hastings Stade for the next 20 years. Many of these works are in public collections in the UK, including Hastings Museum And Art Gallery.
