Reaction to sale of Teville Gate

BUSINESSES and a charity group have reacted to the sale of Teville Gate to a new buyer.

The Grand Victorian Hotel, in Railway approach, Worthing, is located just a short walk from the undeveloped site.

Hotel manager Mark Gould said: “I think it’s great. It needs livening up this end of town. It’s like an eyesore.

I think it will be good for my business even while they are doing it up and afterwards.

“It will draw people to this end of town. It’s got to be better than what’s there now. People don’t feel safe walking down through there at night, especially when it’s dark. I know people who should really just walk out of here up on to the overpass but they don’t, they walk all the way round at night.”

George Brough, assistant manager, and Steph Kirk, trainee manager, at Majestic Wine in Chapel Road, Worthing, also welcomed the news. They said: “It’s always good to have more people in the local area. It will be better than it looks like now. It’s so run down.”

However the pair were wary of construction work leading to road congestion.

Development on the site could have a detrimental impact on a charity currently operating out of Teville Gate House.

Life With Art provides free workshops for people with mental health, learning and physical disabilities, as well as the elderly and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Elsie Green, a workshop leader, said: “It will effect me quite a lot. It will affect the local people who come in here because they won’t be able to have workshops unless we can find another empty office block. We will do our best to find somewhere else but as the economy picks up there will be fewer and fewer office blocks. I understand it’s a problem the charity has to face.”
