Readers of all ages in Bognor Regis will be united by a new project

Boy pupils at a Bognor Regis school are showing reading matters to them.

The team of 11 and 12-year-olds from The Regis School have been trained to become reading mentors to children five years younger than them at Southway Primary School and South Bersted Primary School.

These reading sessions will take place every fortnight from next week.

One of the pupils involved, Jack Dowling, 11, said: “I am very excited to take part in this project and cannot wait to begin.

“I am especially looking forward to working with the younger children.”

Southway head Matthew Westgarth said: “We are thrilled to part of this inspiring project. It will be a valuable partnership for both schools.”

The project to bring all ages together through a love of reading was launched at Southway school on Monday.

Julie Woodward, an advanced skills teacher at The Regis School, had led a bid for the initiative to improve literacy to gain national recognition with the Shine Trust.

The link with the primary schools is the project’s first phase.

After Christmas, pupils will work with a reading mentor group from the town’s Laburnum Centre run by Age UK.

They will read a shared novel based around the Second World War as they share their lives.
