Britain’s biggest bike retailer is collecting second-hand bikes at branches across the country until next Monday.

Suitable donated bikes will be sent to Africa as part of Halfords’ partnership with the charity Re~Cycle. Millions of unused bikes go to waste in sheds and garages in the UK, but in Africa they can be life-changing, helping health workers reach communities in need, children get to school and farmers transport goods to market.

Re~Cycle not only transports bikes to Africa, but also teaches local people how to repair and maintain the cycles, providing employment and improving lives in a sustainable way.

Bikes most in demand by Re~Cycle are sturdy mountain bikes for teenagers and adults. However all bikes that are in a reasonable condition, including kids’ bikes, will be accepted by Halfords provided they are complete with no cracks in the frame and less than 25 per cent rust.
