Recycling Week

East Sussex County Council, in partnership with five local District and Borough Councils, is launching a new campaign during Recycling Week (June 22-29), encouraging people to carry on recycling and "keep a good thing going".

The campaign aims to dispel rumours that material sent for recycling is being stored for long periods of times or sent to landfill.

There is still a strong demand for high quality recycled materials from local recycling sites.

Recycling is good for the environment as it saves energy, saves raw materials and helps combat climate change. It helps cut the amount of rubbish sent to local landfill sites which are increasingly expensive, scarcer, and the worst option for the environment. Almost 10 million tonnes of rubbish are recycled in the UK every year - saving carbon emissions equivalent to taking five million cars off the road.

A spokesman for the County Council said, "Maximising recycling in East Sussex is a priority for us. We are committed to encouraging people to reduce, reuse and recycle their rubbish and people's attitudes to disposing of waste do seem to be changing.

"The percentage of waste being recycled in the county has risen from 29% in 2006/7 to nearly 33% in 2007/08. We would like to thank residents for their efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle but it would be fantastic if we could recycle even more."

The County Council will be joining the five local District and Borough Councils in bringing the national campaign to East Sussex. Posters will be displayed in libraries, council reception areas and Household Waste Recycling Sites.
