Red Cross support vehicle needs volunteers

Visitors enjoying the fun and thrills of open day at Bexhill Community Fire Station on Saturday (Sept 26) will also have the chance to find out more about the Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Vehicle which be in hand.

Information about the service will be available, and members of the public will be able to discover exactly what the support vehicle does by talking to team members Clive Beale and Gary Fellowes.

Clive said: "We will take people around the vehicle. We work under the fire service and we get called out to a fire or a wherever a person cannot get back inside their home. We can arrange emergency accommodation with the council, clothing if they need it, food, and a bit of TLC."

Their presence at the open day tomorrow, from 10am-4pm, is a chance to recruit new volunteers to the service, to help man the Red Cross support vehicle and offer help and comfort to victims of an emergency.

"It should be a good day," said Clive.

"We get invited to at least ninety percent of the fire station open days. We get so much support from the fire service it is unbelieveable. They are really supportive of the service. In the 14 years I have been doing this the fire fighters we deal with on a daily basis cannot get their heads around the fact we turn out in the middle of the night just to go and give welfare...if people want welfare we are out there, it might be tea, biscuits, chocolate - the lot."
