'Red light' police car in smash

A POLICE car answering a 999 call collided with another vehicle after passing through a red light on Tuesday evening.

It happened at the busy London Road / Little Common Road / King Offa Way traffic lights.

The crossroads were blocked for a long period after the police Ford Focus Estate collided with a Ford Escort Estate.

Two police officers and the driver and passenger from the private car were hurt.

The police car, travelling from south to north was answering an emergency call on "blues and twos."

The private car was travelling from Little Common Road towards King Offa Way.

Firefighters from Bexhill and Battle assisted three Sussex Ambulance Service crews and a rapid response ambulance car from Hastings at the scene while police directed traffic.

Sussex Ambulance Service said the crews treated and stabilised all patients involved at the scene, including fitting collars and placing patients on support boards.

The spokesman said that although none appeared to have suffered serious injuries, all four were taken to the Conquest Hospital for further treatment.

Inspector Steve Brookham of the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit at Hastings confirmed that the police vehicle had been going through a red light because of the emergency.

He added: "Fortunately, the injuries were fairly minor, bumps on heads and cricks in necks, that sort of thing.

"All were released after treatment."
