The fox was suffering from a bad case of mange, has no fur on its tail at all, and had rubbed itself red-raw trying to scratch.

Charity Wadars Animal Rescue said: “At this time of year when there isn’t as much natural food around, if foxes don’t eat a healthy diet then their condition drops and their immune systems can become compromised, allowing conditions like mange to take hold.”

Wadars animal rescue has dealt with a number of cases already and has traps out in an attempt to catch and treat others.

Tracy Cadman, Wadars operations manager, added: “If the mange is at an early stage then it is far less stressful for the fox to be trapped, treated, and then released again, but in cases such as this one where it is quite extensive, they need additional medical treatment and care.

“This little girl is now being cared for at a local wildlife project, and will receive treatment over the next couple of weeks.

“Wadars expects her to make a full recovery and then will release her once the skin condition, which is caused by parasitic mites, has cleared up.
