Regeneration boost for seafront

Each Coastal Community Team will receive £10,000 of grant funding to help them establish themselves as a group and develop their Economic Plan for the area.

Newhaven Town Council was successful in its application to form a Coastal Community Team to revive the town.

The funding it receives will go towards the practical steps of repairing the quaint signal box at West Quay and providing historical information for visitors to the promenade next to West Beach.

This will be one more step towards improving the public realm in this part of Newhaven and will start to manifest the aspiration that Newhaven be a destination to live, visit and work in for years to come.

Communities secretary Greg Clark said: “Our Great British Coast has enormous economic potential and we are determined to see it thrive all year round – not just in the summer months.

“The huge number of plans submitted, demonstrate the wave of optimism, and wealth of creative and practical ideas to boost economic lift-off.

“I now want to see their hard work and enthusiasms come to fruition by helping to deliver their ideas through the Coastal Community teams.”

Steve Saunders, Mayor of Newhaven, added: “Here in Newhaven, we plan to expand on the current partnership working that we have with the major players that can influence Newhaven’s future and listen to the local community as to how they would like to see their town improve for the future. Newhaven has faced its own unique challenges but there is significant potential for improvement by accessing the ideas, enthusiasm and pride of our local community.”

Impact Seaford – the regeneration delivery partnership for the town – also received a boost in their plans to drive growth, jobs and prosperity as a Coastal Community Team.

Councillor Paul Franklin, a Board Member of Impact Seaford, said: “Impact Seaford is delighted to be designated as a Coastal Community Team.

“This is a fantastic partnership which brings together local authorities, businesses and the local community to work on developing our plans to make Seaford an even better place to live, work and visit. We have already had some notable successes, including the I Love Seaford app, and the future for Seaford is bright.”
