Reindeer washed up on Littlehampton beach

REGINALD the reindeer is recovering from an ordeal on the high seas after being washed up on Littlehampton beach.

Scores more furry creatures, including other members of Reginald's herd, pink hippos, turkeys and dogs were also left high and dry along the coast at Climping and Littlehampton.

The bizarre sight of the cuddly toys greeted seaside walkers on Thursday and led to Solent Coastguard being inundated with calls.

The toy animals were in a container which fell off a Southampton-bound cargo ship, and split open, spilling its contents into the sea.

Strong winds carried them towards the West Sussex coast, where they ended up on the beaches as furry flotsam and jetsam.

Arun District Council called in contractors to clear up the debris, as most of the cuddlies had been broken up by the time they reached dry land.

Littlehampton Harbour Staff were also involved, and rescued Reginald, one of the more intact reindeer, now in safe keeping at the harbour workshops.
