Relief road is envisaged

A Westergate relief road forms a major part of development plans for up to 1,500 homes in the village.

The road to the west of the existing housing would include a bridge over the railway line to remove the delays at the Woodgate crossing.

According to the proposers, it would also take away traffic congestion and noise from the village by diverting vehicles from the current A259 Westergate Street.

The extra homes, in a range of sizes at an average density of 35 properties a hectare, would be sited to the west and north of the

village.

A new community hub, health centre and primary school, along with six hectares of high-quality business premises, would form part of the overall development.

Hallam Land Management, which has produced the development masterplan, says the proposals will support Westergate's role as a rural service centre as well as repairing the environmental and social damage caused by the effects of the large volume of traffic along the A29.

They will also help to support the regeneration of Bognor Regis by providing easier road access and links to the proposed employment area at Oldlands Farm in North Bersted.

A further option, for a slightly smaller development of 900 homes which would also include the relief road, school and four hectares for job

creation, is included in the masterplan as well.

A third option for just 400 homes completes the development proposals in the masterplan.
