Remove your unwanted vehicle for free this Christmas

UNWANTED cars can be picked up from owners free of charge in the run-up to Christmas.

The unwanted-vehicle amnesty means the council's Unlicenced and Abandoned Vehicles Unit will turn up and take away a vehicle free of charge, instead of the normal cost of up to 40.

A total of 2,500 illegal or untaxed cars have been cleared from the streets of Hastings and St Leonards in the past 18 months.

The council remains one of just 51 local authorities to attain powers allowing them to remove abandoned or illegal vehicles and pursue the matter through the police.

Councillor Jeremy Birch, leader of the council, said: "The scheme has been a real success. Taking on DVLA powers has paid off and we expect to have just as many positive results next year.

"Hastings has been held up as an example of how successfully this scheme can work and we are proud to be leading the way."
