FIVE youths have been given police reprimands after they admitted causing damage to the 6th Lewes Scout Hut in Ham Lane in January.

FIVE youths have been given police reprimands after they admitted causing damage to the 6th Lewes Scout Hut in Ham Lane in January.

Since the incident was reported on the front page of the Sussex Express, the five youngsters, aged 15 to 17, admitted smashing a dozen windows and damaging a fuse box. About 560 damage was caused and the hut had to be closed pending repair.

Now each of the youths, all from Lewes, will either make a financial contribution or will be giving their time to repair the damage.

PC Andy Kidd said: 'Such mindless, senseless vandalism causes great distress and inconvenience in our neighbour- hoods.

'In this case the Scouts have lost income from cancelled meetings and band practice bookings. That is in addition to the loss of their regular meeting place. We recognise that such acts seriously impact on the quality of life of residents and law-abiding citizens. For that reason we will not tolerate such behavour.'
