Request for support to stop flooding

BACKING has been given to Pagham Parish Council's urgent request to stop homes from flooding.

Council chairman Ray Radmall received formal support from the Joint Western Arun Area Committee to demand action soon to repair the serious deterioration of Pagham Harbour’s inner flood banks.

“These form the ‘back door’ to our community, in that they hold back 3.3 cubic metres of water.

“This threatens the inland part of the parish from the church to Pagham Road and beyond,” he said. “It includes about 100 dwellings and a significant part of the Haven Holidays site.”

Cllr Radmall said the protection from the walls had falled significantly recently from a one-in-200-year risk of being breached.

The parish council was anxious the banks were not subject to another winter’s storms. But the Environment Agency did not intend to repair them until 2014/15.
