Resident complaint about new play park

Rubbish, noise, late night disturbance - all fears of residents living near the new Pebsham play park which are claimed to have become reality.

Objections were raised by a group of neighbours of the Seabourne Road recreation park when they saw new play facilities, including a zip wire, being installed and were concerned what this would mean to the immediate area.

The play park was officially opened two weeks ago and Ian Lawrence of Lullington Close has now complained to Rother District Council.

He said: "Since the opening of the new facilities at Seabourne Road recreation park on Saturday May 2, we have been subject to an increased noise disturbance throughout the day and night.

"This became worst on the night of Saturday May 2, when we were subject to a number of youths using the play equipment in an inappropriate manner resulting in residences being kept awake at midnight for about an hour.

"On Sunday May 10 at 03:00hrs we were again awoken by youths using the equipment inappropriately while drinking, shouting and swearing. This went on for over an hour and a half.

"I wish to register a noise complaint against the council as this is not acceptable.

"We have requested before that the equipment is locked up at an appropriate time to prevent this kind of behaviour."

He has photographed drinks cans, beer bottles and broken glass left in the park and forwarded these to Rother District Council

Ian said: "You will see the amount of rubbish lying around that does not appear to be cleaned up and also the beer bottles that are completely inappropriate for a play park, not to mention the broken glass with its obvious dangers to other children playing."

Rother District Council head of amenties, Madeleine Gorman said "Since the new equipment was installed the park has been used and enjoyed by the majority of young people in a responsible manner. Building better play facilities for children is a priority for Rother and other play areas will be constructed around the district this coming year.

"We welcome comments from the public, we want to ensure that this recreation ground can be enjoyed without a negative impact on local residents. Arrangements have been made to ensure that litter at this site is cleared each day. "

"Incidents of anti-social behaviour are a Police matter and we work with the Police to resolve local issues. Residents should report late night anti- social behaviour on 0845 6070999 so that accurate records can be maintained and the Council can liaise with the Police to improve safety in parks. "
