Residents act on danger road

FED up residents have taken their own action over a dangerous Rye road.

Deadman’s Lane, which is used a frequent short cut in and out of town, is too narrow in places for vehicles to pass and residents say there have been numerous near misses.

There are also serious concerns that the busy cut-through could endanger pupils at the two nearby schools in Love Lane.

The narrow lane has led to road rage incidents and drivers having to back out into oncoming traffic on Rye Hill.

Now after years of inaction by East Sussex County residents have come up with their own solution of erecting a sign which cost just £40.

Local people have been campaigning for years to get Deadman’s Lane made one-way from Rye Hill into the town but without success.

Rye county councillor Keith Glazier has been working hard to find a solution but the county council’s highways department had said that making the road one-way was too expensive and that it would not be placed on their list of priorities.

There have also been issues with some residents who need to maintain two way access.

The new sign has been funded by Rother Environmental Group. Christopher Strangeways, from the group, said: “We have several members who were concerned with the issue of Deadman’s lane and as we have a fund set aside for Rye’s road related issues we have decided to try and help reduce the problem by erecting this temporary no through road sign.

It cost £40. “It is often visitors to Rye who can suffer from angry confrontations on this lane as they innocently attempt to drive up the wrong way.

Many of us have witnessed these and the distress they can cause.

“The County Council have been aware of this problem for years and recently are showing signs of seriously thinking about the problem but meanwhile we thought this sign could help a little until they have resolved exactly what they are going to do.

“We hope the residents of Rye will agree. If there is anyone who objects to the sign or would like to make any comments we can be contacted at [email protected].
