Resident's fury at Rother District Council

Andrew Wedmore's opinion of Rother District Council's new wheely bin collection system is that it's all a load of rubbish.

And to prove it he dumped two black bags full of it in their reception area last Friday.

Mr Wedmore, who lives in rural Mountfield, has not had a rubbish collection for over three weeks.

He has desperately tried to get an answer to the situation and said: "I tried the helpline; they said someone would call me back within 24 hours; that didn't happen.

"I reported it again to be told that the rubbish would definitely be picked up within 48 hours, that didn't happen either. I rang again and they said they would chase the contractors and we'd receive a call back that afternoon, and that didn't happen! It's just been a succession of broken promises."

Frustrated by the lack of any firm answers or results Mr Wedmore emailed the council informing them that if he had not received a collection by Friday that he would personally deliver some of the rubbish that was accumulating at his home to the town hall as a "symbolic gesture".

On entering the council offices Mr Wedmore was greeted by a threatening security guard who told him: "Take your rubbish away or you will be prosecuted for fly tipping."

Rother's Democratic Services Manager David Herman spoke to Mr Wedmore and assured him that he would not in fact be prosecuted.

He said: "We are aware that there are certain problems in certain areas. We are working very hard under difficult circumstances and trying to cope as best we can but we are in the hands of the contractors.

"The council apologies to the members of the public where we have not been able to provide the level of service that we would have liked but I can assure you that we are doing everything possible."

Before leaving the town hall Mr Herman assured Mr Wedmore that there would be a collection at his home early next week.
