One resident of Palmeira Square in Hove said there had been four power cuts since Monday (February 26), with the most recent taking place yesterday (March 2) intermittently between 12.15pm and 5pm.

This comes as the city has seen significant snow fall and temperatures falling below freezing.

Margaret Hallah said: "Yesterday was an awful day to be left without any heating. My main concern is that this had already happened on previous days too so evidently a problem UKPower knew about but hadn't taken the action necessary to properly resolve it."

And Green councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty said the power cut also hit neighbouring Adelaide Crescent yesterday.

He said: "Over 50 homes in Adelaide Crescent hit by power cuts. I've reported to @UKPowerNetworks they've got engineers on site, hoping to have power back on by 5pm. Isn’t clear if problem can be sorted out quickly. If more substantial fault, engineers will repair within four to six hours."

A UK Power Networks spokesperson said: "We apologise to residents in the Palmeira Square area of Hove for the recent power interruptions. We appreciate how difficult it is being without electricity, particularly in such cold weather. Power was interrupted to 55 customers at 12.14pm today and staff are working hard in freezing conditions to reconnect all supplies as quickly as possible and to strengthen the temporary arrangements until a permanent repair is completed."
