Developers Globilisation Ltd are currently appealing against a planning decision to refuse permission to erect a pair of 3-bedroom semi-

detached houses in the garden of the Globe pub.

It is understood the pub, which is currently closed, is being sold without the garden, with an applicant, who already runs a successful pub in Kent , eager to buy it and restore it to its former glory.

But many residents, who would love to have a local pub back, feel the chances of it succeeding would be hampered if the appeal to build homes in the garden was allowed.

Margaret O’Neill, who lives nearby and used to work in the pub, said: “It would become a building site and where would people who wanted to use the pub be able to park?

“One of the attractions of the Globe was that it was easy to park there.”

Resident Nicola Hill said: “I am saddened to see the potential buyers having to apply for planning permission without being able to utilise the garden as part of the business plan.

“The garden has historically benefitted the premises and makes a valuable contribution to the openness and character of the Military Road Conservation Area.”

Resident Peter Savory said: “I am concerned that if Rother supports the present plans by extension it will support the partition of this historic pub and garden into two sites. It would be good to have the pub operating but not without its garden.
