Rest in Peace?

THIS was one of the distressing scenes at Bexhill Cemetery this week ... gravestones flattened by the local authority.

Heartbroken Observer reader Jill Thatcher, of Dalehurst Road, wrote to us this week: "You asked your readers to send you photos of Bexhill for your Readers View series.

"I do not think this is what you really had in mind, but would you print it for me?

I am one of the relatives that cried when they saw what the council had done.

"My brother and I both went to the cemetery when the report about stones being laid down appeared in your paper, we tried very hard to rock the headstone. I did not think we had a problem, and then my sister who is the eldest had a letter from Rother District Council services directorate.

"I agree with everything that Nigel and Cathy Davey said in their letter last week, and I think that what is being done is very, very wrong."

Council leader Graham Gubby quoted "health and safety reasons" in defending the council's action in last week's Observer.

He said the council was determined to discharge its legal responsibility as best it could with the minimum of distress.

Further outrage at the council's action is voiced on our Letters pages today.
