RESULT: Hastings votes to leave European Union

Voters in Hastings have elected to leave the European Union.

The Brexit campaign edged a 4,328-vote victory with 20,011 electing to remain in the EU and 24,339 wishing to leave. Thirty-seven votes were rejected.

The result was announced shortly after 3.30am at the Horntye Sports Complex after hours of counting.

Hastings saw a 71.6 turnout, with 44,357 votes cast out of 61,957 registered voters.

The results were verified at the south east regional centre in Southampton before being sent to Manchester Town Hall, where a national result is expected to be announced some time after 7am.

Hastings and Rye MP Amber Rudd was in favour of remaining in the EU but said ‘we knew it [the result] would be tight’.
