RESULT: Labour take Brighton Kemptown from Tories

Labour's Lloyd Russell-Moyle has been elected as MP for Brighton Kemptown, unseating the Tory incumbent.

The Brighton and Hove city councillor overturned Conservative Simon Kirby’s 690 seat majority, winning by almost 10,000 votes in an extraordinary victory.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle said: “I am very pleased and delighted that the people have given their trust to me and I hope that we will be able to take their hopes forward and achieve success for people across the constituency from Woodingdean to Peacehaven from Moulsecoomb to East Brighton.

“We will work hard to make sure that there is a future for their children, their health service, and for their houses.”

Lloyd Russell-Moyle takes Brighton Kemptown from Labour

The Green Party decided not to stand in Brighton Kemptown to give Labour a better chance at winning the seat, and UKIP didn’t stand a candidate, with the ‘Brexit’ vote expected to go to Mr Kirby.

Mr Kirby left the election count after the results were announced.

Both the Liberal Democrat and Independent candidates lost their deposits.

Lloyd Russell Moyle, Labour 28,703 (58%)

Simon Kirby, Conservatives 18,835 (38%)

Emily Tester, Liberal Democrat 1,455 (3%)

Doktor Haze, Independent 212 (0%)

Turnout: 72%
