East Brighton is seen as a safe Labour seat, with Labour's Lloyd Russell-Moyle winning 58 per cent of the vote in the last by-election in 2016, with the Conservatives coming in second with 20 per cent.

The reason for the by-election was Mr Russell-Moyle, who was elected as Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown last year, decided to step down as a councillor to focus on his role in Parliament.

This meant one of Brighton and Hove City Council’s 54 seats was made vacant.

The next scheduled local election for all council wards on the city council is set to take place in May 2019.
