Revenue and customs staff could strike in Worthing

GOVERNMENT workers in Worthing are considering strike action in response to plans by employer Capgemini to cut up to a quarter of jobs.

Between 40 and 50 of almost 200 IT staff employed at the Revenue and Customs offices in Barrington Road face compulsory redundancy because of cutbacks in government spending.

All of those affected work on the Aspire contract, a major IT outsourcing programme that is being scaled back as part of the government's Comprehensive Spending Review.

Capgemini says the job losses, which are likely to also affect workers in Basingstoke and Newcastle, are unavoidable because of the government's new targets to reduce IT costs.
