Revised timetable '˜running well' says Southern

A revised weekday rail timetable cancelling almost 350 services a day is '˜running well' in its first day of operation according to Southern.

Passengers have faced months of delays and cancellations due to staff shortages as Govia Thameslink Railway, which runs services in Sussex, and union RMT have been locked in a bitter dispute over the future role of conductors.

GTR has responded by bringing in a revised timetable today (Monday July 11), which sees 341 trains cancelled, broadly similar to the number of ad-hoc cancellations each day.

A Southern spokesman said: “We know the service level in the last couple of months has not been good enough and we apologise unreservedly.

“This new timetable allows us to target our resources where they are needed most and at the same time give passengers a more predictable service which they can plan their lives around.

“It is a temporary measure while we work with the RMT to end the dispute and bring their members back to work and, while it should be judged over a few days, the first few hours of operation are encouraging.”

Last week this newspaper launched a campaign to strip GTR of its franchise, which includes Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express services.

Earlier this month Southern finished rock bottom in a survey of passenger satisfaction carried out by Transport Focus, carried out between January and March, before the dispute with the RMT began.

According to Southern more than 92 per cent of its services were running on time against the temporary timetable between 6-8.30am this morning.
