A Sussex Police spokesman said: 'The burglaries are taking place in the late afternoon and evening.

'Entry is gained to the properties by either reaching through cat flaps to access keys left in locks or on the inside of doors or smashing windows to reach through and grab keys.'

'Offenders have targeted cash and jewellery, though the main focus seems to have been to gain access to keys for any vehicles parked outside the property.

'Several vehicles have been stolen in this way.'

Arun CID officers have advised the public to be vigilant and park vehicles in garages where possible and remove keys from doors.

Door and car keys should be placed out of sight even when the house is occupied.

Information should be given to DS Vicky Guy, of Arun CID, on 0845 60 70 999 ext 85230.
