HISTORY STUDY GROUP: The subject of tonight's (Friday) meeting in the village hall at 7.45pm will be The Old Coach Roads to Brighton by Geoff Hewlett. Coach travel across the Weald became much more practicable once the turnpikes were established in the mid-18th century, so that travel to London no longer required an overnight stop at Crawley or Godstone. Journey times more than halved. Geoff Hewlett's book The Old Coach Roads to Brighton explores the routes that the public coaches took, one of the busiest of them passing through Ringmer parish, past The Cock and The Old Ship.

FOOTBALL AND SOCIAL CLUB: Tomorrow, Saturday, weather permitting, the first team are at home to Southwick in a SCFL Div 1 fixture with a 3pm kick-off time at The Caburn. The seconds travel to Midhurst and Easebourne for their league fixture, also with a 3pm kick-off time. On Thursday evening in the bar we have the regular monthly general knowledge quiz. Usual format, 50 questions, teams of up to four members and just £1 per team member to enter and all are welcome. Registration is from 7.30pm with some Just for Funs to get the grey matter working with the quiz getting underway at 8pm. This year the clubhouse will have been standing for 50 years, a milestone which we intend to celebrate and, if any club member has any views on how we should celebrate this anniversary, please share them with any of the committee members.

ST MARY’S: Taize Service. The next of these services is on Sunday at 6.30pm. The theme is the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Candlemas). If you have never been to one of these services, now may be the time, a combination of readings, quiet music and silence in a candlelit church. The 8am Holy Communion service resumes on Sunday, followed by the 10am Eucharist Service, both with the opportunity to receive bread and wine or a blessing. Advance notice. St Mary’s plans to join the Lent Group at Barcombe Church on a Thursday evening throughout Lent. More details to follow. Please note, if you would prefer a day-time meeting, please make your views known to Rosemary Colebourn. During this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, many from St Mary’s joined the Baptist church on Sunday evening to celebrate, as well as songs and readings we enjoyed a delicious tea and delightful company. Thank you to everyone involved.

BRIDGE CLUB: At its meeting on Wednesday January 18, the result of the duplicate pairs played was: 1, Alan Disney and Roy Skan; 2, Barrie Smith and Alan Grindley; 3, Lesley Durrant and David Warner. The club next meets in the St. Mary’s room of the village hall on Wednesday at the earlier time of 7pm for the AGM, before continuing as usual. Contact 814220.

WI: At the January Meeting WI members celebrated Ringmer Evening WI’s birthday with a delicious bring and share buffet with a 60’s theme, the Black Forest gateau was especially appreciated. The next meeting is on Tuesday February 7 in Ringmer Village Hall when the talk by Rachel Hunter is on De-Cluttering. On Wednesday February 8 members will meet in the afternoon at The Firs, Lewes Road to make green hearts in preparation for the display to be put up in the Library on Valentine’s Day. On that day WIs nationwide are joining with others to Share the Love of our planet and seek ways to protect the world we love from climate change.
