Ringmer

RAMBLERS: Fourteen members of Ringmer Ramblers had a very enjoyable walk four and a half mile walk around Cowbeech recently. We parked at The Merrie Harriers public house, walked along the lane through the village, branching off through woodlands carpeted with bluebells and into the fruit orchards of Greenway Fruit Farm. Following the path through the orchards the blossom of the pear, apple, cherry and plum trees was magnificent and the asparagus beds were bursting with spears. Our coffee stop at a high point gave us views of the Weald with fields full of buttercups and wild flowers. On our return to the pub six of our members stayed on for a Sunday lunch which they reported to be very good. Our next walk is on Sunday and will be five and half miles around Telscombe. ST MARY’S: Sunday services at St Mary’s continue in their usual pattern this weekend: 8am Holy Communion, 10am Parish Eucharist and 6.30pm Evensong. The Mother’s Union coffee morning takes place on Saturday June 18 at the Old Cottage, Lewes Road from 10am to noon. There will be refreshments, a raffle, various stalls and of course time to sit and catch up with friends. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you there.

BRIDGE CLUB: At its meeting on Wednesday May 18, the result of the duplicate pairs played was: 1, Joan Evett and Sandra Dudley-Williams; 2, Liz and Tim Owen; 3, Alan Disney and Roy Skan. The club next meets in the St Mary’s room of the village hall on Wednesday at 7.30pm. Contact 814220.

JUMBLE SALE: Nevill Juvenile Bonfire Society will be holding a Jumble Sale on Saturday June 4 in the village hall. Doors open at 2pm. Come and pick up a bargain.

WI: At our meeting in May, Margaret Constable and Barbara Marsden led the discussion of members to help them to decide how to vote on the resolutions at the AGM. After this Anne Stamper explained to members the reasons for the appeal to raise more money for the Denman College fabric maintenance fund, and shared some of the things she has done on recent courses she had attended. The next meeting is on Tuesday June 7 at 7.30pm in the village hall when Anne Hardy gives a talk entitled Mongolia. Why Mongolia? On June 16 there is a WI outing to Chartwell and on Wednesday June 15 there will be a coffee morning at The Firs, Lewes Road, 10am to 11.30am, to raise some money for the Denman appeal. Do join us, visitors and new members are always welcome.

SCARECROW FESTIVAL: This is advance notice of this year’s Scarecrow Festival which will take place across the village on the weekends of June 18/19 and 25/26, organised by Ringmer Primary PTA. We are hoping to raise funds for the school and also set up a fun event for families and members of the village. We hope we might attract some visitors too. You can enter as a family or an organisation. Family entries are £3. As an organisation you can submit a group entry. You could also have your own fundraising stalls alongside your scarecrows (teas, second hand books, crafts, yard sale etc). There are two ways you can support the Festival. Enter a scarecrow and do some fundraising/promotion for your organisation (£10). Enter a scarecrow and also advertise in our Scarecrow Programme (£15). The time to start thinking about this is now. SPEED WATCH: The Community Speed Watch group of volunteers is looking for new members. Approved and regulated by Sussex Police and supported by the parish and district council, volunteers monitor vehicle speeds at various locations in the village. CHEYNEY CROQUET CLUB: Sunday June 5 is National Croquet Day and there will be an Open Day at our lawn on Cheyney Field (behind the bowls club). We would be pleased to see any new prospective players on that day at 3pm when club members would be able to show you what to do. If you wanted to come along earlier when we have a barbecue please let us know on 01273 813514, there is a small charge of £5 for the food.

FOOTBALL AND SOCIAL CLUB: Another season done and dusted, we have now been working on the ground and the pitch to get it ready for ground gradings and football next season. Very many thanks to the hard workers who have been giving up their time to get this done. Things continue on the social side and this Thursday evening is the regular monthly fun general knowledge pub quiz. 7.30pm for a prompt 8pm start, teams of four and just a £1 per team member to enter.

CRICKET: Plumpton and East Chiltington vs Ringmer Cricket Club. Plumpton captain George Martin won the toss and decided to have a bowl. Ringmer batted all 50 overs, scoring 212 and securing maximum batting points. Andy Smith (captain) leading by example with a fantastic 90 off of 142 balls, Mat Savage also continued his good form with 58. Paul Brinkhurst took the most wickets for Plumpton with figures of 85-2 off 17 overs. After tea Ringmer gave the old ball to Ringmer veterans Dave Page and Murray Barnett, however Ringmer struggled to make a real breakthrough and Plumpton looked very solid with the bat, especially Paul Oneil who was eventually dismissed for 90 off the bowling of Murray Barnett, Dale Tranter nervously taking the catch on the boundary. Plumpton completed their victory in 41st over.

Ringmer Cricket Club II vs Plumpton and East Chiltington II. Ringmer were put into bat by Plumpton captain Phil Ashworth, Gary Holder (98) and Graham Pitts (41) showed there many years of experience for Ringmer with a solid opening partnership. Ringmer found themselves on 197 off of the 50 overs having lost six wickets. Andrew Westgate was the stand out bowler for Plumpton with figures of 24-3 off of 11 overs. Plumpton then found themselves batting against a young Ringmer bowling attack who were keen to impress. Micheal Paris bowled surprisingly well with figures of 19-4 off his 10 overs. William May and William Crees also with great spells of bowling. The game was won by Ringmer in the 35th over with a fantastic spinning delivery by William Crees.

St Peters IV vs Ringmer Cricket Club III. Ringmer won the toss and elected to field first. Ringmer bowled very tightly and managed to bowl St Peters out for 149 off of 49 overs, David Bush with eight wickets for Ringmer and Joe Walker with a good knock of 59 for St Peters. Ringmer struggled with the bat as they were bowled out for 126 off of 32 overs, Jack Lloyd with five wickets for St Peters.
