Young Ringmer Rovers footballers will be showing off their new dark blue strip with light blue trim after winning a competition in the Sussex Express.

Thrilled chairman Graham Branton was presented with enough shirts, shorts, socks and sports bags for an entire team, plus reserves, by chief reporter Rupert Taylor on Friday.

Helen Pope, of Barcombe, won the football kit in a competition and felt a local youth team could make better use of it than her.

So she generously donated it to the Sussex Express so the paper could find worthy recipients.

The Express invited players in local junior teams to write in and explain in fewer than 100 words why their club deserved to have it.

Young Ringmer players said they were about to start playing but didn’t have jerseys or they had been wearing their kit for two years and it was too small.

Ringmer has teams for every age group except the under 15s and Mr Branton said the new kit would probably go to the under 10s.

A new girls team is also starting its first season and it is hoped to build on this enthuiasm with more teams.
