The main hall at the club, which is part of Glebelands Community Centre, in Greystoke Road, Ferring, was festooned with red, white and blue bunting and flags for the occasion on Thursday.

All the tables had pristine white tablecloths, blue napkins and smart shiny cutlery, ready for an enthusiastic gathering of 120 members.

Lilian Holdsworth, current president and founder chairman, welcomed all the guests to the party.

“Originally called the Over 60s Club, its new and more succinct title reflects the variety of activities enjoyed by its members,” she said.

“The tables were soon filled and the hubbub of conversation had the backing of the duo Andy Woon and Peter Godfrey.”

Lilian and Valerie Simpson formed the club’s own Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to launch the afternoon’s entertainment, performing an American jazz routine with Lilian dressed in top hat and tails and Valerie in a glamorous gown.

“Some 20 members of the Terry Clough Choir, under the leadership of Anne Robinson, then gathered to sing There’s No Business like Show Business and Till We Meet Again, with audience participation,” added Lilian.

“Joy Barker, leader of the poetry group, recited The Chair, a humorous poem from the recently-published Poems, Pensions and Poets.

“The choir sang a medley from their recent successful concert and ‘Fred and Ginger’ closed the entertainment with a romantic waltz which would have been given at an ‘8’ from the Strictly judges.”

During tea, there were animated conversations and a friendly ambience. A good time was had by all as the duo’s infectious music enticed many partygoers on to the dance floor.

Lilian ended the party by thanking the helpers who had decorated the hall, the caterers and the guests.
