River levels start to fall

River levels across the south are starting to recede after heavy rain yesterday. The Environment Agency has seven Flood Warnings and 27 Flood Watches still in force but expects to clear most of these during the course of today.

Across the region there are a number of success stories where Environment Agency actions prevented devastation to communities in Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

In Selsey, Environment Agency teams worked through the night to shore up the shingle along the beach at Medmerry as strong winds caused waves to batter the coast.

In Rowlands Castle, Environment Agency teams helped local people put out sandbags and move furniture in advance of flooding from a nearby stream.

Firefighters rescued two pensioners from their homes in Durrants Road after they were cut off by flood water.

Regional Director for the Environment Agency's Southern Region Howard Davidson said: "The worst is over now for most people and, despite the heavy rain, most places stayed dry.

"Every time we come this close to flooding, it serves as a wake-up call that we all need to be prepared for flooding. Anyone can check whether they live in a flood risk area by visiting the Environment Agency website or phoning Floodline on 08459 881188.

"If your home is at risk of flooding, sign up to the Environment Agency's Floodline Warnings Direct service to receive flood warnings.

"Anyone who is in a flood risk area should think about how they would protect their home if flooding looked likely. There are many steps that people can take to reduce the impact of flooding, like switching off the gas and electricity, keeping valuable documents in a safe place and planning where to stay if the area was evacuated."
