RIVER UCK: Crisis point passes

6.45pm: The level of water in the River Uck at Uckfield appears to be dropping.

The crisis point was expected within the last hour but it came and went without any flooding in the town centre.

Water is continuing to flow rapidly under the town bridge.

People are still nervous of what will happen with rain still falling on saturated land.

The Uck is known to react rapidly to heavy rain.

Water sweeps off the hilly land north of Buxted into the river, which makes it rise swiftly.

The last river flood was in 2000 and since then townspeople have campaigned for flood defences.

No physical defences have been built in the town with the idea of a wall around the Somerfield car park stalled.
