Road to nowhere?

A ROAD sign on the A27 in Sompting welcoming drivers to the wrong village is driving parish councillors round the bend.

The Welcome to Lancing sign has been put up by the Highways Agency on the eastbound carriageway of the A27, before drivers reach the Hill Barn traffic lights.

Tim Clarke said he could not believe the sign when he first saw it, because it is actually in the neighbouring village of Sompting.

Mr Clarke said: "The sign is almost in the middle of Sompting '“ certainly not on the Lancing border. Road information signs are supposed to be informative, and help drivers. All this sign will achieve is to confuse motorists.

"The sign is totally unnecessary anyway, as there has been an Adur council sign welcoming motorists to Lancing in the correct location for many years. This is just a waste of tax payers' money."

Fellow parish councillor Daniel Yates said there was no need for this sign as there was already a Welcome to Sompting sign further down the road.

The Highways Agency said they had consulted with West Sussex County Council. But a county council spokesman said it was down to the Highways Agency.
