ROBERTSBRIDGE BONFIRE SOCIETY: Oh what a night, huge congratulations to the Bonfire Society for putting Robertsbridge on the map. The evening of celebrations could not have been better. The weather was very inclement during the day with wind, rain, even snow and then the sun for a short while. It was bitterly cold but the Bonfire Society didn’t falter in organising the best event we have had in the village for years. As for the effigy it was a unique piece of art that has never been seen before. The effigy crew should be very proud of themselves for coming up with what was a monologue from Guido Fawkes 400 years after he became infamous. There was satire, politics; art all rolled into one and it was impossible to take your eyes off it once it started. But after the speech from Guy Fawkes, in front of your eyes, it then morphed into the face of David Cameron and then with some enormous bangs and blasts blew up. Fantastic is all that can be said and the message from 1605 to 2015 had a grave similarity to it. If you didn’t see it look it up on Facebook, well worth a watch. As for the fireworks, well again they were fantastic. The weather was just right this year without the fog that so often covers the display. A beautiful array of colours that covered the sky for everyone in the village to see even if they were not able to be at the event. The procession was huge and there seemed to be more societies than ever helping Robertsbridge celebrate 25 years.

A huge thank you to the whole society and anyone else that has helped, for all the hard work that goes on during the year to raise funds and for the safe, brilliant, spectacular event that they put on. Heres to the next 25 years guys. The first fundraiser for next year is the Christmas Hampers Draw and tickets are available now from the Floral Boutique and Bonfire Members. Please support this to start off the pennies in the empty coffers towards next year.

I nearly forgot to say about the Guy Competition, which the Floral Boutique sponsors had 3 prizes this year. Winners were the Cubs Red Six, who won £15, then in second place was Poppy and Sasha Powell winning £10 and then in third place the Cubs Green Six won £5. Well done to you all and thank you for taking part and supporting.

ROBERTSBRIDGE SCOUTS: are holding their Annual Prize Bingo tonight, Friday November 27, at Robertsbridge Hall. Doors open at 7pm for eyes down at 7.30pm. There is to be soft drinks available during the evening and you are welcome to take your own alcoholic beverages. Everyone is welcome to this event, the more the merrier.

ST MARY’S SALEHURST: is holding the Christmas Market tomorrow, Saturday November 28, between 10am to 1pm. There is a change of venue this year and you will find it at Robertsbridge Hall. More space for more people hopefully. There will be something for everyone, all the usual stalls and more. Hopefully to tempt you into buying some fabulous Christmas presents and seasonal goodies. Please support, especially if you want to see Santa, because a little bird told me that he might be stopping off for a visit.

Services for Sunday this week, November 29, that is Advent Sunday will start at 9am in the Mission Room with Holy Communion and at Salehurst at 11am with the Confirmation Service. This is being taken by Bishop Nicholas Reade confirming candidates from Hurst Green, Salehurst and Vinehall School. This is a highlight in the St Mary’s Calendar.

ROBERTSBRIDGE ARTS PARTNERSHIP: is bringing a lively new show to the village tomorrow evening, Saturday November 28. With the staging of The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La mancha. This imaginative and provocative show is performed by Little Soldier Productions who won the Stage Award for Acting Excellence at the 2014 Edinburgh Festival. This is at Robertsbridge Hall starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are £9 (concs are £6) and available from Judges Bakery.

CHRISTMAS CAPERS: is on Friday December 4, put it in your diary as it is fast approaching.

DARTS: We played at Mountfield Club ‘A’ last Friday and won the single darts 5-2 with wins for David Goodsell, Michael Stone, Kevin Dixon, Paul Barham and Keith Stone however we lost all the pairs matches. There were 100+ scores for Keith (118), Michael (105, 3 x 100) and Kevin (2 x 100). We won pushpenny 4-1 with victories for Michael Stone, David Goodsell, Dave Fortsch and Keith Stone with David scoring a ‘goldwatch’. Tonight we are playing the Old King John in the Knockout Cup at The Millers 8pm.

FOOTBALL: The Bridge 2nd team played at Icklesham Casuals II in very windy conditions on a very heavy pitch but despite that the first 16 minutes were the best we have played for some time. Ben Thorpe opened the scoring after three minutes when he rounded the full back for pace and cleverly chipped the advancing keeper from ten yards but the best goal of the game came on 10 minutes when three one touch passes led to man of the match Kenny Jones scoring. The Bridge were passing the ball around well in the heavy conditions and excellent work by Tommy Moyce on 16 minutes saw Thorpe net his second but the hosts came back when they were awarded a free kick 20 yards out which eluded the diving Nick Townsend on 27 minutes. The rest of the half saw chances from both sides squandered. The second period saw the wind get stronger which made playing football very difficult but The Bridge had the more chances with Thorpe just missing on the hour mark and an appeal for a penalty when Sam Edmunds was fouled on 70 minutes was turned away by the referee as The Bridge held on for a welcome victory. Tomorrow the 1st team are away to Crowhurst in the 3rd Round of the Birchwood Group Challenge Cup while the 2nd team travel to Battle Baptists II in the 3rd Round of the Eastbourne Coach Finishers Challenge Cup with both matches KO 1.30pm.

LADIES DARTS: The next open evening is at Robertsbridge Club on Monday December 7 at 8pm. This has become a very enjoyable and social evening so why not come along and have a go at playing darts in comfortable surroundings with cheap drinks and food.
