Football : What a weekend for both our sides with the 1st team pulling off a surprise win at high flyers Iden and the 2nd team salvaging a point against Sedlescombe Rangers III. The 1st team played at Iden in the 2nd Round of the Robertsbridge Charity Intermediate Cup, sponsored by Speedtrace Builders Ltd., and got off to a flyer when centre back Michael Stone unleashed a 25 yard shot that the home keeper could not hold after 24 minutes but the hosts levelled just 2 minutes later when a shot was deflected into the net, however The Bridge restored their lead on 34 minutes when goal machine Guy Ballard struck. The second period was just 4 minutes old when Ballard hit his second and with man of the match Ben Hardy solid in defence the host had very few chances as The Bridge lined up a semi-final tie at either Westfield II or Ninfield United next week. The 2nd team entertained Sedlescombe Rangers III at the Clappers and The Bridge started well with Bradley Lyne missing a couple of chances but Rangers came into the game and failure to cut out a cross led to Rangers taking the lead a minute before the break. The second half saw chances from both sides go begging before Rangers doubled their lead when The Bridge defence failed to deal with a cross and possibly the smallest player on the pitch was left unmarked at the far post for an easy header on 70 minutes. Glen Bladon was awarded man of the match for his determination and his solid defending and as the final whistle approached The Bridge suddenly found the net with a strike from Jason Marsh two minutes from the end and from the re-start a goalmouth scramble saw Ian Austin hit the equaliser for a well deserved point in the race for third spot in the ADA East Sussex Football League Division 6. Tomorrow the 1st team are at home to leaders Hollington United while the 2nd team travel to Sandhurst II with both matches K.O. 3p.m.
