Football: Football returned to the Recreation Ground since December when the 1st team hosted St.Leonards Social in the ADA East Sussex Football League Premier Division. The Bridge took the lead on the quarter hour mark when goal machine Guy Ballard scored and the same player doubled the lead on 38 minutes after good work from man of the match Toby Blackman. The second period saw the Social pressure the hosts goal and they got their reward when a penalty was converted on 70 minutes but just five minutes later the Bridge restored their two goal advantage when a mix up between the Social keeper and defender led to an own goal. Social scored a minute from the end to set up a frantic last few minutes but the Bridge held on for a 3-2 win. In Division 6 the 2nd team played at Orington II and should have been two goals up in the first five minutes but poor shooting let us down while the hosts took the lead on 6 minutes when poor marking from a throw in allowed their winger to cross to the far post for an easy tap in. It took the Bridge 38 minutes before we tested their keeper when Mark Lucas’ shot was saved as we went into half-time. The hosts increased their lead on 55 minutes with a splendid 20yard strike but just a minute later Justin Hardy’ 25 yard strike found it’s way under the diving keeper. This inspired the Bridge and with man of the match Ian Austin controlling the midfield we were denied an equaliser by the hosts keeper who pulled off two excellent saves but our pressure finally told when Chris Aspinall finished off a good move five minutes from time for a hard fought point. Tomorrow the 1st team don’t have a game while the 2nd team are at home to leaders Catsfield II, who have only dropped one point in their 11 matches so far, K.O. 3p.m.
