LOVELY WEATHER: The lovely weather continues and brings forth little surprises to my days. One morning, I heard some noise early on, and when I looked out of my window I saw two big cock pheasants really fighting quite hard and being watched by others. We have had an influx of ladybirds, who hibernate in the sides of the windows on the sunny side of the house, so that when you open them to let fresh air in, the ladybirds come in as well. Butterflies and bumblebees are also coming into the house quite frequently. I was quite amused to find two tiny golden brown newts, swimming happily in one of the water bowls I leave for the animals outside my back door. They looked up at me, as I took them to the pond, as if to say '˜Hey, that's our personal swimming pool.' They were really cute.

WATER LILIES: I’ve cleared my small pond out and separated the water lilies into separate buckets, leaving just one, so if anyone wants a free water lily, please phone me, you will have to collect it.

C7: Some time ago, we had a lethal red car driver who regularly used the C7 and terrified people. I don’t know if he was reported, because he seemed to disappear and people have felt safer. Now I wonder if he’s back, because I’ve seen a red car taking dreadful chances on this road, usually between 2pm and 4.30pm and I wonder that he/she has not caused an accident.

POLLUTION: I was pleased to read in the Times that Skoda are one of the smallest polluters to our atmosphere. They came third from the bottom with Audi being below them and SEAT being the best. Surprisingly to me, Renault are the highest polluters.

SAD TO READ: I was a bit sad when I read about the trouble at the rugby match between the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex at the sports ground. For supposedly intelligent people, it was bad behaviour. As I was at Sussex for 21 years, I have to say they did have a few uppers and downers, but it’s not good to have news like this in the press and on TV.

SEAFORD: There was also a piece about where is the best place for older people to downsize. It turned out to be Seaford, as prices and location were reasonable. I have a few friends who have moved there and would probably agree, as they seem happy there.

HOSPITAL VISIT: On Friday, I had to get Mike to the Princess Royal Hospital at Haywards Heath for his three-monthly check up. It’s a bit like a military operation to sort out, just to spend 10 minutes with the consultant. First I have to phone for hospital transport at least a week beforehand, and fortunately it always comes on time for pick-up (not bad for Coperforma). The ambulance always blocks the road because cars park outside the pub cellar delivery point, and as it’s on a corner, it’s dangerous. Why they don’t use the pub car park I don’t know, as it must also inconvenience the pub. It’s not easy for the ambulance drivers to park as we live opposite. When we get to the hospital, we usually have to wait (the appointment was only 20 minutes late this time). I needed to get Mike into the disabled toilet where we got stuck, as I couldn’t open the door and had to call for help. Then we had a 1½ hour wait for transport to get home. By this time, Mike has had enough of sitting in a wheelchair. I can’t help thinking how much does this cost the NHS just for a ten-minute check up. There should be an easier cheaper way of doing it. The ambulance that picked us up was Thameslink from the Essex area and the drivers had been put up at the Golf Club Hotel near Uckfield which is high standard. How much did this whole procedure cost for one person?

SPRING SHOW: Tomorrow, Saturday, Rodmell Spring Show, 2.30pm in the village hall.

PARISH ASSEMBLY: Friday April 7, 7.30pm the Annual Parish Assembly in the village hall. This is usually well attended. It’s a pity residents don’t also support our parish council meetings throughout the year to give support to those who give their time freely and work so hard for us. Do let the council members now why you don’t attend. I’m sure they would like to know and could work on it.

GARDENING: Saturday April 8, Churchyard Gardening from 9.30am till noon.

EASTER: Sunday April 16, Easter Day Church Service at Rodmell, 11am.

WI: Tuesday April 18, Rodmell and Southease WI 8pm, Jeanette Chapman from Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare will give a talk, helped by canine friends Lewis and Bertie.

ST GEORGE’S DAY: Sunday April 23, St George’s Day and Shakespeare’s Birthday. To celebrate, there will be cream teas in the Village Hall from 2.30pm. Home-made scones, cream and jam £5.
