Rodmell and Southease

QUIZ EVENING: I now have more details for Lewes Support Group's Quiz Evening, in aid of St Peter and St James Hospice and Continuing Care Centre. It will be held in our pub, the Abergavenny Arms, at 7pm on Wednesday March 2. It will cost £10 per head for a team of four to six people and the price includes a two course hot buffet. For tickets, contact Maureen on 01273 474980 or [email protected]. This is always a good evening so do come along.

SAFETY NOTICE: I have had an important product safety notice about tumble dryers as a potential safety hazard and quality concern has been identified with two types of tumble dryers manufactured between April 2004 and September 2015. In some cases it seems, excess fluff can come into contact with the heating element and present a risk of fire. I was asked to call on their Freephone hotline 0800 151 0905 which I have been trying for days with no luck, so I presume I shall have to put pen to paper and ask for a safety check.

HEARING TEST: If you, like me, think your hearing is not as clear as it should be. I can highly recommend getting your hearing aids from Worthing Audiology Centre who come to the Phoenix Centre, Lewes on certain days of the week and will give you help and information on NHS hearing aids. All I did was inform my doctor I had a hearing problem and I was referred to the Phoenix Centre where they very quickly got me sorted out with easy to use hearing aids which hare excellent and didn’t cost me a penny, unlike the ones I got for my mother, which cost thousands and she lost them. The Phoenix Centre is a wonderful place where you can go for help with all sorts of things and in some cases it means you don’t have to attend a hospital. There is parking outside and it’s very easy to get to. If you use the Phoenix parking bays you don’t have to pay. There is also a public car park nearby. The Phoenix Centre is based behind the Harvey’s Brewery Yard.

POCKET MONEY: At present I am listening to a radio programme about the amount of pocket money given to children these days. I had pocket money from the age of 6 years old and every birthday it went up by 3p. I could save up for anything I needed or spend it in the local sweet shop. I was taught how to handle money from a very young age and it has helped me so much. When I went out to work I had to vie my mother housekeeping, save a certain amount and what was left was mine. I think my wage was about £4 per week but it was in the late 50’s early 60’s when the man of the household probably earnt about £10 per week and kept his family going on that. What amazes me these days are the amount of parents who do not take any money towards housekeeping from their children. As many of my friends say, this seems to result in them expecting freebies throughout their lives. I suspect in some cases parents who have their children still living with them, hope that their children will save to get a mortgage so don’t take housekeeping money from them. I’ve been told by youngsters that a night out going to a club can cost them £100 for a night with taxis, drinks, food and entrance money. That’s a ‘lotta money’ as Cilla Black would have said, but that’s the way they live these days. Just a thought – do children have piggy banks now? I heard a saying today which seems very apt for present times: There is enough in the world for those that need but never enough for those who greed.

HOORAY: The sun is out today (Thursday February 11) and everyone seems so much happier. Did you know Pancake Day goes back to Pagan days when pancakes represented the sun and the warmth of spring days to come.
