TALK: It was lovely of Ian Everest to do a tribute to my Mum at the end of his great talk on Farming Nostalgia and how farmers managed to run their farms and feed us throughout the war. I especially loved the piece about the elephants, especially the lady in long skirt, immaculate blouse and hat walking behind an elephant ploughing. She walked as though she had just come out of the pub. The elephants pumping water and throwing hay over the men to catch, was also great photography. Ian does some wonderful talks and film shows and I would urge you to go to one of them if you haven’t already done so. It’s a great evening’s entertainment, usually supported by farming folk from far and wide, and local area. Thank you for the tribute to Mum Ian, it meant so much to me.

REMEMBRANCE SERVICE: The Remembrance Service at Rodmell Church was fairly well attended. There was a lovely piece read by Robert Webber’s little girl and, the Widows Lament, read by Lorna Melia. I am pleased to hear that Marcus, our Associate Vicar, likes to hear the old popular hymns that everyone knows and can sing. There’s nothing worse than hearing mumbles from people that either don’t like or don’t know hymns. This was brought home to me when I watched Songs of Praise’ Remembrance Service and all the old familiar hymns were sung with gusto and there was a great feeling of warmth and communication. They certainly had good rhythm and were very tuneful. I know quite a few people who over the years have been put off from going to church for this reason, my Mum was one of them, she loved a good sing.

CHRISTMAS: Christmas is getting nearer and nearer and don’t we know it. The post is full of charities sending calendars and cards and magazines with gift ideas. I had my first Christmas magazine in September.

ADVENT SERVICE: The Advent Service of Light takes place in Rodmell Church on Sunday, November 27, at 4pm. This is always a lovely service.

DRIVING: So, people who use their mobiles whilst driving are going to be clamped down on even more. Good news, I see so many on their phones driving along the C7 and up the village on school days. In this modern age, I wonder why cars aren’t built with a system in them that stops people from doing this dangerous thing, especially when they have children in the car. Death has come down since drinking and driving became a no no. Let’s hope stopping mobile phone use will have the same effect. I had a cousin killed by a drunken driver and it also devastated his family for years from the repercussions of it. Some years ago a friend of mine had a car go through her wall on the C7. The mother was on her mobile and had her children in the car. They all escaped with, I believe, no injuries, but it could have been bad.

FUNERAL: Last week I mentioned the funeral of Frederick Ernest Grainger and a bit was cut out and should have read: The grandchildren all wore tweed caps as their beloved grandfather had done al his life.
