GRASS VERGES: It's good to see the grass verges being cut, as they were beginning to be a problem for walkers, who had to walk in the road. The road signs are also becoming visible again. As I've driven around the countryside I've wondered how visitors to this area have been able to find their way around because so many road signs were covered by greenery.

NEW HOTEL: Despite all the fuss about Premier Inn being built in Lewes, it doesn’t look too bad and it was really needed as Lewes is becoming such a mecca for tourists and there has been a lack of this sort of accommodation. I had to admit I had a few misgivings about it in the beginning, but then we all have to move on into the future and give people what they need.

FRUIT: What has happened to the bunches of small seedless grapes we could buy? I haven’t seen them for years. I have a grapevine but mine have seeds in. I have apples everywhere at the moment and if anyone has an apple press they are welcome to come and pick them for free. I think Monks House has an Apple Day on October 15, 12.30pm to 5.30pm, so if I have apples left by then people are welcome to have them, but please phone me first on 01273 476876.

BANKS: I went into a Seaford ban recently with two of my German clients. There were two girls in place to deal with customers and a queue formed of around six people, so another came around from behind to encourage people to use the inside cash machine. Not one person wished to use it, all voicing an opinion that they wanted to deal with a person not a machine, as they didn’t wish to put people out of work. I have to add that it was not all older people, which was refreshing to see. Even my clients said that in Germany many people feel the same and voice the same opinion.

WI: Sadly I did not get to the WI evening when Lee Duyvesteyn gave a talk entitled Lee’s Bees. I had visitors from Wales turn up, who have been my friends for many years, so we spent the evening in the pub. I’m sure the evening was successful.

OUR PUB: The pub gave locals and friends a wonderful evening on Friday September 16, when their new chef gave us some tasters and canapes to try, so we could see what is to come. We also had the very entertaining Watling Street Band who went down very well. This was a celebratory party to celebrate Jon and Lucie having run the pub for four years and doing a great job of it as far as the village is concerned. Some of my visitors were at this evening and were very impressed at the pub and the village and thought it was a wonderful place.

VISIT: I recently had a lovely lady with her husband and sister turn up at the house, because she had lived here 50 years ago in No 1. Unfortunately I was on the point of going out so could not engage in a conversation. I didn’t even find out her name, but she told me she now lived in Oxford and her sister lives in Canada and was over on a visit.
