PATIENT TRANSPORT: We used Patient Transport Services when Mike had to go to Haywards Heath Hospital recently. We didn't have a problem, but it was a little surprising to find that the private ambulance that brought him home had to go back to Ashford, Kent. What is happening to this country of ours? Things seemed to run smoothly in the past, or is it a figment of my imagination? I seem to remember trains running on time and buses that had a conductor as well as a driver. We didn't worry about catching late buses back after a night out, especially if you were a lone female, as people had to behave or get thrown off.

SOUTHEASE OPEN GARDENS: As we had a family gathering the same time as Southease Open Gardens, I sadly did not get to the event, but I hear it was very successful. They couldn’t have had better weather.

VISITORS: It’s quite spooky that just recently I’ve had people staying for B&B who are almost replicas of village people. One lady looked, spoke and laughed like Maureen Ford and the other lady was like Sian who used to live up Mill Lane. They say everyone has a double.

C7: I’m getting a little fed up of driving along the C7 and finding, as I go round a corner, a car overtaking a cyclists and coming right for me on my side of the road. This is a bendy road used by a lot of cyclists and it has various speed levels all the way along, as well as all the villages on it having bad exits/entrances. Please motorists, do be more careful and patient, I don’t want to meet my maker just yet and neither do other people.

BUTTERFLIES: Where have all the butterflies gone? Apart from the small ivy blues and a few cabbage whites, I haven’t seen many in the past few weeks, but I did hear the cuckoo on June 1.

FRUIT: It’s going to be a good fruit year in our orchard so the people who come to pick the fruit and make jams, wines, juices etc will have a bonanza. I’m keeping jars for them as we have a system. I grow the fruit, they pick it then I and my B&B’s enjoy the jams, pickles etc given to me as thanks for the free fruit. It works well and saves me a lot of work. I’m amazed at how many B&B’s are turning up because friends and relatives read the column and tell them about me. Thank you one and all. I hope Sunnyside doesn’t let you down.

WI: On Tuesday Rodmell and Southease WI have another interesting meeting with demonstrator Carol Goodman giving a talk, From Sheep to Knitting Wool, in the village hall. Visitors welcome at 8pm.

REFERENDUM: Thursday is the Referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union, 7am to 10pm in the village hall. At this time I still haven’t made up my mind as you don’t know who to believe, there is so much back-biting. Oh, for a truthful approach to such an important matter. Many people I hear feel the same.

COFFEE CLUB: On Tuesday June 28, the Coffee Club will be at 11am and we will be guest at the National Trust at Monk’s House.

DITCHLING MUSEUM: I recently made an effort to go to Ditchling Museum of Art and Craft which at the moment has an exhibition of Edward Johnston’s work. He was responsible for creating the typeface for the London Underground. The exhibition celebrates 100 years of lettering which can still be seen across the capital’s transport system and became an iconic typeface for modernity. There is much to look at if you have an interest in such things including a magnificent old printing press. There are many regular drop-in workshops and events for young people and families, plus evening events for adults. Ditchling has always been a hub of art and craft work and is a very interesting old village. As a child I visited Ditchling with my mother often and I used to love the old museum, which was there for many years, and had a lovely tea-shop and shop. The new museum is very modern but still has a tea-shop and shop area where one of my friends works as a volunteer on Sundays.
