Rodmell & Southease

SUMMER: The sun comes out and so do all the problems that some people associate with it, such as sunburn, barbecues, fireworks, raves and lots of exposed flesh everywhere (not all of it pleasant to look at). We are told that sunscreen should be used several times a day, not just once. I understand Australia is very '˜hot' on this. Barbecues are now much loved by lots of people, but not everyone enjoys the smell of burnt offerings wafting over the fence. Personally, if I have to eat food cooked on a barbecue I prefer it burnt, less chance of getting food poisoning. Raves can disrupt people sleep, ruin farmers land and frighten livestock and who cleans up the rubbish left? One of my friends went to a rave in Denmark and said everyone was listening to the music by headphones, were very well behaved and cleared up their rubbish. He did say it was odd seeing everyone dancing with headphones on and no loud music to upset people. Apparently there is a petition of 100,000 dog-lovers for the restriction of firework displays to just four days a year. Other animals are also affected, farm animals have died from the shock of explosions and hedgehogs have been incinerated whilst hibernating in bonfires. As for exposed flesh, I think I can cope with the postmen/women wearing shorts. Many people can't however cope too well with people doing their shopping in beachwear.

NURSING HOME: I am in the process of trying to move my mother from her very good care home to a nursing home, as she needs extra nursing care these days. As mum is 97, it’s not a pleasant thing for me to mover her from the home she loves and if you check on the computer the record of some of the homes available, it’s depressing. More than 7000 beds were deregistered up to March 2016. With 3000 new beds becoming available, the largest net loss for a decade. A company which runs 47 homes say they are turning people away as council fees are too low and it’s more economical to leave beds empty. This is for care homes and I’m not sure how nursing homes are faring. Not much better I suspect. We need more homes for the ageing population. I would love to hear from anyone who has been very pleased with a nursing home, especially in the Ringmer, Peacehaven, Telscombe, Newhaven, Seaford or Denton area. It has to be an EMI registered home.

SCHOOLS: Reading about children who have to climb down an 800m rock face to get to school where they stay for two weeks, made me think how lucky our children are to be able to go to schools without making perilous journeys to get the chance to learn. When I was in the Scilly Isles (in the time Harold Wilson moved there) the children had to go to the mainland to board at school, as do many children in the Scottish Isles. To many children around the world an education is so wanted they make many dangerous journeys just to get to school. Our school is putting up a good fight. Let’s hope it brings results.

VISITORS: I had some Americans from New York stay recently. When I asked them what they thought of Mr Trump they said they would leave the country if he became president. They also said that larger countries should take some of the migrants as Britain is so small. They thought it was only fair that larger countries should take larger amounts. They loved England, especially this area.

JOINTS: I was horrified to hear recently that so many young people are having hips, knees and ankle joints replaced due to excessive sports activities. I suppose it’s hardly surprising, since the pressure and wear on joints day after day throughout our live is constant and to put extra pressure on them is bound to have an effect. Swimming is probably a much gentler exercise. So many of my own friends who are sport enthusiasts are now having problems. I think I’ll stick to gardening and gentle walking and hope my joints will last a little longer.

OPEN GARDENS: Sunday is Rodmell’s popular Open Gardens day from noon to 5pm. It is an extended event this year as we are celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday as well. This is always a very popular event with many lovely gardens open and as usual, teas in the village hall.

ARTS AND CRAFTS GROUP: On Tuesday Rodmell Arts and Crafts Group meets in the village hall, 7.30pm to 9pm. At this meeting we will hear from Susan, Vicky and Ali about their new project.
