Rogue drivers targeted in Bognor crack down

A day of action to crack down on drivers breaking the rules of the road in Bognor Regis has been hailed a success.

The multi-agency operation involved Arun District Council, NSL's DVLA wheel clamping team, Sussex Police, Environment Agency (EA) officers from Chichester and members of Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA).

The clampdown was the first operation in the area which involved such a wide range of agencies.

The scheme also targeted illegal traders.

Sergeant Steve Chalcraft of the Bognor Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "As part of our drive to reduce the risk of death or serious injury on our roads, we will continue to work with partner agencies to educate drivers and remove unsafe vehicles."

Sussex Police, including officers from the Bognor Regis Neighbourhood Policing Team and Roads Policing Unit, used marked and unmarked police vehicles equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition to detect 37 offences during the day-long crackdown.

These included a 60 fine for drivers not wearing seatbelts, a 60 fine and three penalty points for drivers using a mobile phone at the wheel, and 60 and three penalty points for speeding offences.

Officers also seized two vehicles which had no up-to-date MoT certificate and for which the drivers were not insured.

VOSA issued five prohibition orders during the operation to drivers of cars with numerous different defects, including faulty tyres and tinted windows which

fell foul of safety rules.

Twenty-two vehicles were stopped by the EA and the driver's checked to see whether they had a waste carrier's licence for the load they were transporting.

NSL, the nationwide parking and transport services provider, clamped a total of 15 cars because they were untaxed.

Tim Cowen from NSL said: "When we can assist the police to reduce other vehicle crime as well it makes the service even more useful."
