Roman Mysteries author at Littlehampton school

The Roman Mysteries writer visited years four, five and six at River Beach Primary School, in York Road, Littlehampton.

Pupils were given a unique insight into the author’s life and her inspiration for her series of historical novels for children. She also provided them with a recipe for their own writing.

Julie Sampson, PA to the head teacher, said: “It was a memorable experience. The children were mesmerised as Caroline entertained and inspired them with her ‘how to write a great story’ presentation.

“Caroline joined a group of children for lunch and then set upon the task of signing one of her books for each and every child who had heard her speak. The children were thrilled to receive a personally-signed book.”

The Thieves of Ostia, written in 2000 was the first of Caroline’s adventure stories, set in Ancient Rome. The Roman Mysteries combine her love of art history, ancient languages and travel.

In 2007, the BBC made a glossy children’s TV series based on her Roman Mysteries series of books and in 2009, Caroline won the Classical Association Prize.

Year five teacher Sarah Burford said it had been a special opportunity for the children. “They were over the moon to receive a book with their name signed by Caroline. I can’t thank her enough for coming to our school and inspiring the children with her visit.

“There was such a buzz around the school after the children met her; everyone commented that it had been a fantastic day.”

One pupil, Georgia, said: “It was exciting to meet a real life author. It was really interesting to hear Caroline talk about books. I especially liked hearing her talk in different languages, including ancient Greek. To receive a book signed by Caroline was really special.”

Another added: “Do I have to come to football practice? I just want to read her book!”

Caroline said it had been a great day. She added: “It was a joy to speak to such happy, enthusiastic and well-behaved children at River Beach Primary School. The staff were fabulous, too.”
