Ropetackle calling for war diaries

An event is planned to mark the centenary of the start of the war, focusing on what life was like in Adur in 1914.

People are asked to contribute letters, postcards, photographs and diaries from relatives, including stories they have been told about the war and, in particular, about the so-called ‘golden summer’.

Ropetackle chairman Martin Allen said: “We are wanting to show what life was like at the time, as seen through the eyes of people who were there. In particular, we are interested in what was happening in this area.

“Although there are no longer any surviving members of the generation who served in the war, many people have second hand accounts – written, photos and memories handed down to them.”

The project will culminate in an evening of memories, music, poetry and film, probably in early October, with contributions from guitarist Richard Durrant, schools, local historian Trevor Povey and poets Attila the Stockbroker.

It will tell the story of the sudden ending of the Edwardian era, with the shocking events of the opening months of the war.
