Rose Green boy calls for national celebration

MOTHERS have one. Fathers have one. St George has one. But children don't.

And Rose Green schoolboy Luke Petronijevich-McDowell wants to put that right.

He is calling for a national celebration of childhood based on outdoor play and organised by parents and the community.

Luke, eight, has persuaded his school, Rose Green Junior School, to stage its first children’s day. The event on Monday will focus on outdoor play and having fun.

“Children don’t have a special day,” said Luke. “I would to take my toys and anything I want into school so I can have a day of play.

“I built a den with a friend when I played outside recently and I would like to do that in school.”

The idea arose on Mothers’ Day last year when Luke asked his mum, Sara, about the lack of a children’s day.

She recalled this when she was attending a parents’ event in the spring where child expert Sue Palmer talked about the lack of outdoor play.
