Rotary aids carer breaks with a nautical theme

LOCAL Rotary Clubs are to sponsor sailing barge breaks for young carers.

Young carers are a group of children who sometimes get forgotten. These children, who perhaps care for a parent or sibling, some from as young as five or six, will have the chance to have an exhilarating experience, away from home, with other children who understand their everyday lifestyle.

The breaks will take the form of trips on the historic sailing barge ‘Cambria’. Each voyage will take eight children, and can be a mix of boys and girls.

They will learn about sailing and help to sail her. There will be a fully qualified sailing crew and two adult helpers, or ‘bosuns’, on each trip.

Trips have already taken place, organised through Rotary District 1120 (Kent and East Sussex) as part of the Give Children a Childhood project. The Rotary Clubs of Battle and Senlac are planning to sponsor a trip for young carers from the local area.

The clubs are raising funds to pay for the trip and a major fund raising event will be an Olde Tyme Music Hall evening, professionally presented by The Olde Tyme Players, at Battle Memorial Hall on Saturday April 21, 2012.

Tickets are available at £15 from Battle Post Office or by calling 01424 854383.
