Rother plays its card right on recycling

The council will collect ANY kind of cardboard, as long as it is clean and doesn’t have food residue on it.

All residents need to do is flatten it, put it in the green wheelie bin or red bag and leave it for collection.

The cardboard then goes off to be made into compost.

Rother District Council member for waste, recycling and the environment, Councillor Tony Ganly, said: “It is wonderful news that residents can now recycle cardboard and it puts us ahead of many other authorities.

“And the best part is that the whole process is incredibly simple.”

He added: “Rother is already one of the best performing councils around for recycling, which is something we would like to thank our residents for.

“With cardboard recycling in place, we can improve to an even greater degree.”

Green bins are limited to one per household and Rother District Council cannot provide additional bins.

Meanwhile, as many authorities continue to struggle with the backlog caused by bad weather and the holiday season, Rother is up-to-date with its collections.

Working closely with waste and recycling contractor, Verdant, an additional black bin collection was made available during a “recycling week”, contingency plans were put in place and extra efforts were made to reach households.

“Members of the public accepted the challenges we faced and we are grateful for the patience they displayed, “said Cllr Ganly.

“Thanks to their understanding and the hard work of contractors and officers, Rother has no backlog of rubbish, unlike many other areas of the country.”
